Golden Roots

The Golden Roots project is a collaboration between Help My Neighbour Society and Access Family Services Inc.

The goal of our Golden Roots program is to involve students in the lives of seniors, and to write inspirational stories about those seniors. The program has invited most Schools in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

This project intends to put some colour in both seniors' and youth's lives by getting youth to interview seniors from various cultures and to write inspirational stories about them. These stories will be posted online (in English). A panel of Judges will review the entries (anonymously) and vote for the most inspirational story. The winner will be awarded a $3000 CAD scholarship.

Golden Roots project meets two NHSP Priorities:

  1. Volunteerism between seniors and other generations:
    • Youth interviewing and writing inspirational stories about seniors
  2. Social participation and inclusion:
    • Targeting the invisible, seniors unknown to their community.

From among the National Priorities, Golden Roots meets the following:

  1. Ageism, Diversity, and Inclusion:
    • Getting youth to appreciate seniors by writing or reading their inspirational stories.
    • Making invisible ethnic seniors known to the community.
  2. Helping seniors adjust to a virtual environment.
