Seniors Lounge

Creating an online community that will focus on informing, inspiring and guiding seniors about health, emotional, social and financial issues.

Although the project targets BC seniors within Metro-Vancouver and Fraser Valley, being online, seniors in remote and rural areas who have internet access are can participate.

Aside from providing a safe haven for seniors to "virtually mingle" on our secure and monitored website, we also run regular informational sessions to help them safely navigate through the challenges of their Golden Age in holistic way: mentally, physically, socially and financially.

This secure online community project will provide regular information and will keep an updated board on fraud awareness. The online lounge will also be keeping a list of member-referrals for safe service providers available locally.

Seniors Lounge is focused on the following goals:

  1. Creating a safe and accessible virtual environment that benefits the seniors through safe resources and informational sessions for healthy aging, inclusion, diversity, and social participation within the limits of social distancing (e.g. walking groups, organic gardening groups, online healthy cooking and Christmas Carolling, etc.)
  2. Running awareness sessions and creating online tools and safeguards that combat mental health issues, elder abuse, fraud, and ageism.
  3. Encouraging seniors (especially those home-bound) to contribute to families in the community by participating in a “story time” program where they would read stories to children (individual face-time, live streaming, video-recorded reading sessions, etc.)

Our priorities for Seniors Lounge:

  1. Volunteerism among seniors and other generations:
    • "Story Time" - Seniors reading stories to children.
  2. Engaging seniors in mentoring:
    • Volunteer professional/experienced seniors running informational and awareness sessions for other seniors.
    • Seniors leading groups of seniors (walking, healthy cooking, crafts, gardening, singing)
  3. Promoting awareness of elder abuse and fraud:
    • Awareness sessions and scam/fraud boards.
  4. Social participation and inclusion:
    • Internet access and free membership in the Seniors Lounge removes any geographical, social and financial barriers, even for home-bound and remote/rural seniors.
